Greetings West Valley students....Here is a link to a video on youtube that I have created to help you navigate our course more smoothly. This 20 minute orientation should answer many of your how-to questions. And, although it doesn't show on my face, once the camera was off, I really WAS smiling at all of you. :)

Textbook
Having the textbook from day 1 will be the key to your success. The bookstore should have books in stock, although we did add another section so I am not sure about the quantity. The publisher website gives us a reduced price on the bundled book....it really is one of the best deals that I have seen, particularly since it comes with Free Ebook. I highly advise that you sign up for that when ordering. Or, consider purchasing just the ebook, if you prefer. Here is the information I am seeing on the Cengage (publisher) website:
Reduced price bundle (Understanding Nutrition, 13th ed AND Diet Analysis Plus: http://www.cengagebrain.com/ micro/cabrillocoll $120 (although my rep said that this price was changing to $133)
ebook (Understanding Nutrition, 13th ed, only): http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/isbn/9781133607014 $128
Diet Analysis Plus only: http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/isbn/978-0-538-49509-7 $50
Bookstore (use section 26013), loose leaf (not bound), bundled: http://westvalley.bncollege.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TBWizardView?catalogId=10001&storeId=28562&langId=-1 $150
I cannot guarantee these prices, but this is what was posted on 12/28/2012. I encourage you to order your book ASAP. The bookstore IS open on 1/2.

Winter Session 2013, West Valley College
West Valley is offering 2 winter section classes this January. This is an intensive course, covering all 16 weeks worth of material in a "4-week" session, with the first 2 days as holidays. All enrolled students will need to email me by January 2nd to confirm a spot in the class. In addition, you must log into our course that day and complete the Intro Quiz or the Intro Discussion post which will count as positive participation. Without this, I am required to drop students as a no-show. I anticipate being able to add any waitlisted students and will need an email requesting and add code by 1/2, as well.
The following is a tentative copy of the course schedule. Information about textbook and application requirements are in the sidebar. If you opt to use an older version of the text, it will follow our chapter outlines most of the time, but you are responsible for any information not found in the the older version of the textbook. Quizzes are written with a look towards the newest version.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at my gmail account. My id is nutritionrusso followed by the @gmail.com. Or, you can follow updates on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nutrition-with-Denise-Calafato-Russo-MS-RD-CGE/209236099092535?fref=ts

Late Start Fall Class
Welcome to class, students. I hope you are ready to get started with this intense, 8-week course. You should have received email communication from me. If you look under the previous Fall post, you will find information about orientation that will apply to our class. The sidebar has information about the textbook. The most important thing you can do while getting ready for class to start on 10/22 is to obtain the textbook.
I hope you are ready to learn about the science and fun of nutrition.

Fall, 2012
Welcome Back to School!
Cabrillo, CAHM 20: All classes begin on Mon, August 27th. Students enrolled in the online section must attend the mandatory orientation/first class meeting on 8/27 from 7-9 pm in room 454. Any student who cannot attend the orientation on 8/27 will need to email between 8/24 and 8/27 (before 5 pm) to prevent being dropped from the class and to make alternate arrangements. See Fall schedule for more information. All online students should log into class, via Blackboard, on August 27th. In addition, please make sure that your email address is up-to-date with the college as I will email all students on my class roster before August 24th.Face-to-face students (MW mornings) need to attend class on August 27th to confirm class participation or will be dropped from the class to allow another student to add. Class meets in room 426. The syllabus will be posted in Blackboard so you may download it from there, before class, if you would like a hard copy.

West Valley:
NS15 Online (2 sections). Classes start August 27th. (Late start class starts in October, with more information published here then.) There is no face-to-face orientation scheduled, however you must read the entire syllabus to better understand how to navigate in the class. In addition, there is an online orientation, posted on youtube, see below. All enrolled students must email between 8/24 and 8/27, to confirm their spot in the class. Students who do not make contact with me during that time will be dropped from the class to make room for those wishing to add. In addition, please make sure that your email address is up-to-date with the college as I will email all students on my class roster before August 24th.

Class begins June 4th and is completed June 30th.
All enrolled students must email me between May 31st and June 3rd to confirm their planned participation for this class. Any student who has NOT contacted me by 6 pm on Monday, June 4th may be dropped to make room for a wait listed student. If you are enrolled but not planning to participate in the class, please drop ASAP. We are in the process of adding a second section of nutrition but currently, the class and waitlist are both full. Keep in mind that, although I may drop any student who has not confirmed attendance, it is the students responsibility to drop the course if they are not planning to attend.
Students who are currently waitlisted (as of May 26th) will be automatically enrolled in the new class on May 29th. Fees will then be due by the next due date vs due by May 29th. Any other student who would like to add or who ends up on a waitlist after May 28th should also email me between May 31st and June 3rd to request an add code. I will provide these as quickly as possible, dependent on drops/class capacity. Any student who cannot be added to the wait list but who would like to be added should also email me during these dates to request an add code.
Please keep in mind that this is a RIGOROUS course. Students taking this class over 4 weeks usually do best if they have a couple of hours/day for participation. We cover the same amount of material as covered during a traditional semester. It is suggested that you have the book ASAP. Order the book before the class starts as, any delay in getting the book will impede your ability to succeed. You can preview the first chapter for free at the publishers website. You need BOTH Understanding Nutrition, 12th edition AND Diet Analysis Plus. The publisher has bundled these together for a reduced price, but I HIGHLY suggest that you pay the additional money for 2-day shipping. I have definitely seen students withdraw from the course when regular shipping goes awry and they end up without a textbook. This link is to the reduced price that the publisher has set-up for us: http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/en/US/storefront/US?cmd=DisplayLandingPage&id=6098&cid=MS1998&entityNumber=4103
Here is a link to the online orientation. Although it is designed for a full-length course (so note that when it talks about the 4-week assignment blocks that really refers to 1 week in our class) it should help you to navigate the course and also give you an idea of how this class is organized. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bucB9T4O8Co
Below is the course schedule.
If you have any other questions, please do email me at my nutritionrusso gmail address.

Orientation Video: Cabrillo Online Learners
The following is a link to the orientation video created for the online class. It does start basic (with log-in info) but also goes over the course requirements. Please check out the video if you have any questions about class organization.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1Zjqk-fsrE
Also, all classes are FULL! They may not show up that way in Web Advisor as add codes are NOT working for many students but I have over-enrolled all classes. I will add students, as able, if other students drop the course this week.

Welcome Back Cabrillo
Cabrillo students return to school on Monday, Feb 6th. In order to prevent being dropped from a class, face-to-face students must attend the first day. Online students will need to attend the orientation on Monday night OR send me an email by 6 pm on 2/6 to let me know if you have a conflict. The orientation times has changed to start at 7 pm.
Please note that all classes will have a Blackboard component which is where you will find the syllabus (face-to-face students) or the Course Information folder (online students). I will not be bringing hard copies to class.
Access to Blackboard will occur by Monday morning and you can log in anytime to see what information is there for you.
I have sent a Welcome To Class email to all online learners and will send one to all to all face-to-face (F2F) students by Friday night. If you do not receive this email and you have an email address registered with the college, then send me an email (through Cabrillo's home page) so that I can make sure that I have your correct email address.
In the meantime, enjoy your last weekend off and happy Super Bowl.
Eat well, play fit,
Denise

Orientation Video: West Valley Learners
Greetings West Valley students....Here is a link to a video on youtube that I have created to help you navigate our course more smoothly. Spring Session, 2012
Spring session begins January 30th at West Valley and February 6th at Cabrillo College. The syllabus for all classes will be made available to you, electronically, the first day of class, in Angel (West Valley students) and Blackboard (Cabrillo students). Please use this blog to find information about textbook requirements, office hours, orientation (online Cabrillo students) and the add process.
ENROLLED STUDENTS:
It is very important that ALL ENROLLED students confirm their planned attendance for class on the first day of school. For Cabrillo students, this requires being in class on Monday, Feb 6th. (Online students have an orientation scheduled on Monday night, from 7-9 pm in room 450.) For West Valley students (all online), you must send an email to me between January 27th and January 30th stating that you are confirming your intent to participate in class. The waitlists for all classes is long so, without your confirmation, I may have to drop you in order to add a waitlisted student.
WAITLISTED STUDENTS:
If you are on the waitlist, you will need to contact me to request an add code.
West Valley students will need to send me an email, requesting to add.
Cabrillo F2F students will need to attend lecture on Monday morning, requesting to add.
Cabrillo Online students will need to attend the orientation on Monday evening, Feb 6th and request to add.
I am not always able to add all waitlisted students (as each class has a cap), but I will do my best to add as many as possible.
*Please note, if you are a Cabrillo online learner, and you have a conflict with the orientation, send me an email prior to that date so that you are not dropped from the course.
If you have other questions that are not answered on this blog, please send me an email and I will reply at my earliest convenience.
Eat well, play fit,
